Activities and Achievements (2014-2015)
- Seminar On “Introduction of Sitar”, was organized by Department of Music, on 31st July, 2014. Dr. Sangeeta Sharma, (HOD, Department of Music) gave a warm welcome to the new comers. Later Manpreet Kaur student of class BA I gave brief historical introduction of Sitar, its origin and its importance.In the end ,studentshave a question related to sitar to solve their doubts, whose answer is satisfactory given to them.
- Seminar On “Basics of Sitar”,was Organized by Department on 9th August, 2014. Parts of Sitar, Formation of Sitar, Sitting and Holding of Sitar and Various Playing techniques were taught to students.Student of class BA I, Simran kaur was the speaker.This seminar actually proved beneficial for B.A.first year students.
- A Seminar on “Swar & Saptak”, was organized by the Department on 20th August, 2014. Miss Parminder Kaur of BA I shared her views on the topic.The aim of this seminar was to give detaied knowledgw of She told that The swara concept is found in Chapter 28 of the ancient Natya Shaster a estimated to have been completed between 200 BCE to 200 CE. It calls the unit of tonal measurement or audible unit as Śhruti, with verse 28.21 introducing the musical scale as follows,
These seven swaras are shared by both major raga systems of Indian classical music, that is the North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic).In the general sense swara means tone, and applies to chanting and singing. The basic swaras of Vedic chanting are udatta, anudatta and svarita. The musical octave is said to have evolved from the elaborate and elongated chants of Sama Veda, based on these basic swaras..Siksha is the subject that deals with phonetics and pronunciation. Naradiya Siksha elaborately discusses the nature of swaras, both Vedic chants and the octave.

- Department organized a seminar on the topic “Jaties of Ragas” on dated 29th, August 2014. Miss Shilpa class BA III was the speaker. The aim of this seminar was to give detailed knowledgw of jaties of raag. She told that Raag is a melodic framework for improvisation akin to a melodic mode in Indian classical music. While the raag is a remarkable and central feature of the classical music tradition, Each rāga has three jaties and raag is an array of melodic structures with musical motifs, considered in the Indian tradition to have the ability to "colour the mind" and affect the emotions of the audience
- WORKSHOP - 10 days workshop (01 Sept, 2014 - 10 Sept, 2014) was organized by Department of Music for students to understand different types of Indian Classical Musical Instruments. Dr. Virender Kumar (Retd. HOD), Department of Music, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was invited as subject expert who trained various students in playing different instruments. Students learned the playing techniques of instruments like Sitar, Santoor, Dilruba, Guitar, Banjo, Jal-Tarang, Patti-Tarang (XYLOPHONE), Harmonium and many other instruments.
- WORKSHOP -Department organised a 10 day workshop on 'Folk Instruments of Punjab', from 18th September, 2014 to 27th September, 2014. Mr Narinder Kumar (Shanty) was invited as expert. Starting from introduction of folk instruments of Punjab, Mr Narinder taught playing techniques of various folk instruments.
- A Seminar on topic “Sitar Ki Vadan Shelliyan” was organised by Music department on 12th September, 2014. Miss Harpreet Kaur student of class BA III was the speaker. She told the studemts about diffenent vadan shallies of sitar. Mr. Sarasvatas also shared his views about the topic and cleared the doubt of students.
- To tell the importance of Laya and Taal In Indian music a seminar on “Laya and Taal” was organized in the department on 26th November, 2014. Miss Navjot Kaur student of class BA I delivered lecture on this topic.She told the student about three laya and imprtance of taal in music
- Seminar on Topic “Swarlipi Paddati”, organized on 5th march, 2015.Miss Jaspreet kaur of BA I and Miss Shilpa BA III spoke on the topic. There are a few notation systems in India but the most famous one in northern music is the one invented by music Pundit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. This is simply called the 'Bhatkhande notation system'. ... This is the only system used by Northern Indian classical and pop musician all around India and the world.
- One day seminar on topic “Thaat Paddati of V. N. Bhatkhande” was organised on 7th February, 2015 The aim of the seminar was .to tell the students that The modern thaat system was created by Vishnu narayan bhatkhande, an influential musicologist in the field of classical music .The speaker of the topic was Sukhbeer kaur student of BA II told the students that .in the early decades of the twentieth century. Bhatkhande modelled his system after the Carnatic melakarta classification .According to Bhatkhande, each one of the several traditional ragas is based on THAAT or is a variation of, ten basic thaats, or musical scales or frameworks. The ten thaats are Bilawal, Kalyan, Khamaj, Bhairav, Poorvi, Marwa, Kafi, Asavari, Bhairavi and Todi;

- A Seminar on topic “Avirbhav & Tirobhav” was organized on 29th January,2015. This seminar was organised to tell the students that to create and reinforce in the Raga the trem Airbhav & Tirobhav is used.Miss Kulwinder Kaur student of class BA III was the speaker She said that While the Raga has some specific rules one have to follow so that the process of creation and expansion within that structure will give rise to the proper emotions and moods. The expert performer, or composer adds certain shades of other Raga melodies with great skill, taking it to the limit, expertly maneuvering in ascending and descending movements, until finally bringing the melodic shape of the Raga back to its original form. This process of camouflaging a Raga temporarily is termed Tirobhav or deviation. Coming back to the original Raga form after the deviation is called Avirbhav. Miss Kulwinder Kaur spoke on the theatrical part of the topic and Prof. Pooja Kundra trained the students with pratical session.
STAGE PERFORMANCE
Stage performances are helpful in developing the creativity of the students. stage performance is helpful in reducing the stage fear and makes a student move towards becoming a performer . Keeping in view, the department organised a stage performance on the famous raag "BIHAG".The students who performed was Sonia (B.A.II) on 12th November, 2014.
- Department of Music organised one more stage performance on the famouse Raag "Miyan Ki Todi ''on 20th January, 2015. Harpreet Kaur, student of B.A. final, playing Raag on Sitar. She started the Raag with Alapchari, then she played Maseetkhani Gat with Toras .After that she played Razakhani gat with toras and Jhalas.

A VISIT TO BLIND HOME
A Visit to the Blind Home was arranged on 4th February, 2015. Around 50 students along with their teachers took
rice, biscuits, and chips, washing powder and bathing soap with them. The
inmates of the home felt thankful towards the visitors for showing so much
concern. The main motive of this visit was to create awareness among the
students about the life and problems of blind people. It is of great importance
to apprise the students about the hardships and problems of the challenged
ones.

- Department of Music organised extension activities on 4th February, 2015.Extension activity provides a link between the college and society. These activities are basically organised to make the students aware about their responsibility towards the society. Students were taken to mother Teresa home . Students actively participated in this activity,The students of music distributed clothes and eatables.They were very enthusiastic and service minded.

It is matter of great pride and honour that our college Folk Orchestra team participated in Punjab State Inter University Heritage Youth Festival, won the first prize and has become a Colour Holder team.
CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTHDAY OF BHAGWAN DEV ATMA
In every year ,we celabtate the Birthday of Bhagwan Dev Atma, with whole heartily .Because Bhagwan Dev Atma contributed a lot to Dev Samaj .
This year the Students of music department performed Folk Orchestra at Mahotsav . Team of Folk orchestra played various tunes of Dev Samaj Bhajans on various folk instruments.
